A few words from Terry Pratt

I’d like to welcome you to a webinar that I will be hosting at the end of April called "Pain Neuroscience and Manual Therapy Go Hand-in-Hand." The purpose of the webinar is to discuss both aspects of pain neuroscience and manual therapy, and discuss how manual therapy can open up a window — a function — and pain neuroscience is an integral part of what we do in manual therapy. I truly believe that manual therapy is only as good as the neuromuscular re-education in the functional application in the decrease in fear or its end negotiation with the central nervous system to improve function in patients. So I'd like to spend some time discussing this, discussing aspects of what we do in the world of manual therapy, and also how it is not so different to pain neuroscience. Both are integrated seamlessly into everyday practice and sometimes we're doing it and we don't even know it. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the end of April!

A few words from Jason Winburne

I want to provide a brief introduction about a webinar I will be hosting on June 16th entitled “Oncology Differential Diagnosis in Orthopedics”. What I want to discuss are some of the key concepts of differential diagnosis in our orthopedic population. We will dive into some of the signs and symptoms of potential underlying non-musculoskeletal pathologies related to neoplasms. We will cover some of the potential red and yellow flags both in the subjective history and objective examination that may present with referrals that commonly come into our clinics.

To me the differential diagnosis part of our profession is the most challenging and exciting part of being a PT. As many of you have probably experienced understanding what needs to be in our clinics and what needs to be referred out has helped us to become a better clinician and service to our patients. So on June 16th, I look forward to sharing this information with you. Hope to see many of you there.

A few words from Gary Kearns

Do you see acute onset low back pain? Can the lumbar musculature actually go into spasm or is this just a subjective descriptor? Can the lumbar musculature account for the severity of their symptoms and loss of function?

In the next installment of NAIOMT’s Contemporary Topics in Orthopedic Manual Therapy, I’ll discuss some of the theory behind how the lumbar spine musculature responds to cyclical loading impacting the viscoelastic properties of both active and passive restraints, how the patients may present and demonstrate how application of dry needling as a first line of defense can have profound effects on their pain and function in a short period of time.
