NAIOMT COMT-2: Cervical Spine

This is the second course in a series of 5 courses in the COMT certification.

This case-based, lab-focused course features human movement and high performing PT management of the cervicothoracic spine. Participants will refine an efficient cervicothoracic screening examination and analyze total upper quadrant movement, incorporating the patient's health conditions, pain presentations, and relevant biopsychosocial factors. Mobility patterns of the upper quadrant system are studied, and the central and spinal neurophysiological factors determining normal and abnormal movement patterns. Management strategies include education, activity modification, manual therapy techniques, and individualized neuromuscular rehabilitation prescription, with the goal of restoring optimal function and preventing future health conditions and impairments. Participants will incorporate techniques into evidence-informed clinical practice guidelines for specific upper quadrant movement impairments and interpret relevant outcomes measures to guide treatment progression.

Terrance P. Pratt

Terry is a native of Nova Scotia, Canada and graduated from the Southern University in Tennessee with a B.S. in Anatomy and Physiology (1994), and Andrews University in Michigan with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy (1997). He also has advanced physical therapy distinctions including OCS (2021), FAAOMPT through the NAIOMT program (North American Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy) in 2013, and his COMT through NAIOMT (2006). He has been a fellowship instructor, course instructor, and examiner for NAIOMT since 2014 teaching over 100 courses across the USA and in Italy. He also has spoken at local community groups, APTA SIG and local APTA conferences. “I always enjoyed being active, so I naturally became interested in physical therapy. Orthopedic physical therapy is like putting together a puzzle. Finding the right pieces to construct a care program to address the needs of the patient while finding the right exercises to help them adapt and recover. I enjoy educating patients on their issues and helping them recognize the impact of their daily activities on their health and wellness. This allows me to tailor a plan to their lives to help them recover and prevent reinjury.” “There’s a long history of “PT” being an acronym for “pain and torture,” but I’ve worked most of my career to change this perception. It’s important to create a safe environment where a patient can express how they’re feeling as we work together to help them reach their optimal health and function.” Outside of the clinic, Terry enjoys family time with his wife, children, as well as running, hiking, traveling, reading, and is a self-described “rudimentary” guitar player.
