  Overview

The NAIOMT examinations follow core courses 500-800 (Levels I-IV). A certificate is granted after successful completion of the Level I and II exams. Level III Exams include a written exam, submission of case histories, and an oral/practical exam. The physical therapist earns a certification and may use the NAIOMT initials CMPT (NAIOMT certified manual physical therapist) after successfully completing all Level III exams. Successful completion of the online exams are required to apply for the Level III exams.

For Level IV certification, a student must successfully complete all NAIOMT exams. After completion of the Level IV Oral Practical exam, the physical therapist may use the initials COMT (NAIOMT-certified orthopaedic manual/manipulative therapist). The COMT may undertake Instructor or Clinical Fellowship Instructor training with NAIOMT.

The three established levels of examinations are designed to be taken at the conclusion of preceding course work and in sequence. A student may challenge an examination without completing the entire course work, although this is not recommended.

Please note: Andrews University Students working toward a NAIOMT Certification should contact the NAIOMT Exam Coordinator for details regarding financial and academic obligations.

Foreign PT's Welcome in NAIOMT Courses/Exams:

NAIOMT courses and exams are available to foreign students as long as they have a physical therapy license from a country with a program accepted by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy.  In addition, a website link to the licensing board website of the country of the foreign student is required to check the current status of student's physical therapy license.

  Exam Process and Scheduling

Written exams are generally scheduled at least twice a year. Level III Case Histories are due on the same dates. The Level III and IV practical exams are also offered at least twice a year. If there are a number of students in one area that are interested in taking the practical exam, these may be arranged regionally. Six months notice is required to schedule a regional practical exam.

Examination dates are set by the examination committee and administered by the examination coordinator. Examination costs and dates may be found on the current examination schedule. It is important to honor all deadline dates when applying for an examination.

Site coordinators and volunteer models assist the oral practical examination coordination. Volunteer proctors assist the written examinations. Candidates taking the written examinations obtain their own proctors. NAIOMT will have final approval of proctor selection.

Informative exam packet may be obtained from the examination coordinator. These individual packets contain examples of past examinations and/or case history guidelines.  The exam packet material is occasionally updated. Be sure to take reference to the exam material you receive with your exam confirmation email.  It will contain the most up to date information. If you have Case History Guidelines and Sample Case Histories that are dated before August of 2010 you DO NOT have the most up to date material. Please contact NAIOMT Exam Coordinator for updated material. Using dated material especially with the case study exams will not provide you with the expected/required format of the exam.  This may result in forfeiture of your exam or can result in a non-pass. Please be sure to check your emails!

The online exam packet is available for download in the section below.

Cancellation Policy for LIII and LIV Oral Practical Exams:
If you are not able to pay the full application fee at the time of submitting your application, you may submit a $500/$625 NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT with your application. The deposit amount will depend upon which exam location you are taking your exam. The balance of the exam is due 12 weeks prior to the exam date or the candidate risks forfeiture of their deposit and time slot.

Twelve Weeks Prior to the Exam Date:
1.) Cancellation on or after the 12-week deadline will result in the loss of the deposit ($500/$625). If another exam candidate is on the waiting list takes the exam spot (up to 8 weeks prior to the exam) the $500/$625 deposit will not be lost, but will be applied to another exam date. A date change fee of $50 is applied. If an exam candidate chooses not to reschedule the exam they forfeit all exam fees paid at that point.

Cancellation may jeopardize the running of the exam. NAIOMT reserves the right to cancel oral practical exams due to lack of registrants. NAIOMT will make every effort to give at least an 8 week notice if an exam needs to be cancelled or a date change needs to take place.

When NAIOMT cancels or makes a date change, there is no financial penalty to the candidate. NAIOMT will endeavor to transfer the candidate to another exam site or date as close as possible to the original arrangements. NAIOMT will not be responsible for any costs involved in changing travel plans. The candidate is advised to wait to make travel plans until after the 8 weeks pre-exam date, when changes are less likely.
